The ferroalloy that is still used by he largest tonnage is high carbon ferromanganese. It is the main deoxidizing agent in steelmaking and a very important alloying element. Ferromanganese can be produced in blast furmace or in submerged electric arc furnace. Generally high carbon ferro managnese contains 72 to 80 % Mn and 6-7 % c. In electric arc furnace, to produce one ton of high carbon ferro managense 2.1 tonnes of manganese ore, 0.6 tonnes of coke, 0.15 tonnes of uncalcined limestone , 27 kg söderberg paste and 3.2 mWh electric energy is used.
