Alacero, a Latin American steel association, called on local governments to limit scrap exports to help revive economic growth in the region.
The association said this week that china is expected to increase scrap consumption as it shifts more steel production to the arc furnace model. This change will create “distortions” in emerging markets, including Latin America, which relies on scrap as a key raw material for steelmaking.
Alacero said the limiting quotas for scrap exports is one of the “key measures” to avoid the impact of China’s new steel production routes. It mentioned that Colombia had introduced export quotas for scrap steel to avoid shortages in the country’s domestic market.
