Founded on February 23, 1961 by engineer José Corgosinho de Carvalho Filho, Ferbasa began operating in the town of Campo Formoso (state of Bahia) as a mining company with the purpose of producing chrome ore. The leader in its segment, Ferbasa is among the 500 largest companies in the country and the 20 largest in Bahia, with annual sales in excess of US$500 million.
Renowned for its high-quality products and social initiatives, the company, which produces high-carbon ferrochrome, or charge chrome (HC FeCr), low-carbon ferrochrome (LC FeCr), ferrochrome silicon (FeSiCr) and ferrosilicon (FeSi 75), celebrates its fiftieth anniversary in 2011. It is the largest producer of ferrochrome alloys in Brazil and the sole integrated producer in the Americas, and its operations include mining, reforestation and metallurgy.
