Ms. Sun, GM of ICDA Beijing Office, gave a wonderful speech on Global Chromium Development in the 5th MnCrNi & Nickel International Conference held by the Ferro-Alloys.com on Oct. 17th.

Ms. Sun gave her analysis that 96% of the chrome ores was used in the metallurgy fields; HC ferrochrome accounts for 94% of the global production of ferrochrome and two thirds of the ferrochrome was used to manufacture the stainless steel.

“The volume of ferrochrome production declined due to the short supply of power in South Africa between 2012 and the beginning of 2013, which has impacted the supply of chrome ore. China is the destination of 60% of South Africa’s Exported Chrome ore,” she said.
She predicted that China’s stainless steel production would increased by 10% in 2014, which would increase the demand for ferrochrome. China is the largest producer for stainless steel. China has become the largest producer of ferrochrome since 2012 when it exceeded South Africa, but all of China’s chrome ore is imported. China has excess capacity in ferrochrome industry, adding the increasing cost of materials and the severe environmental regulations, so some of the small ferrochrome companies have to lower their production of HC ferrochrome or even begin to produce other product instead.
