Eskom said the risk of rolling blackouts on Wednesday and the rest of the week was low after engineers had made good progress in repairing the coal supply at a power station after a weekend accident.

Eskom had warned previously that the system was expected to be “under extreme pressure on Wednesday and Thursday.”

The utility said in a statement the situation had improved as it had boosted capacity at its Majuba Power station, which lost around 3 500 MW on the weekend after a coal silo supplying it collapsed, forcing Eskom to implement rolling blackouts, known locally as “load shedding”, for the second time this year.

“The risk of load shedding is low today due to the increased generating capacity at the Majuba Power Station which is now at 1 400 MW,” Eskom said.

It also said dam levels at power stations which used water to generate electricity were running low but it would unlikely have to resort to any power cuts later in the week.
