Monday 21 May, 2012Oman Observer reported that Gulf Mining Materials Co, one of the largest chrome ore mining and exporting companies in the Sultanate, signed an agreement to set up a ferrochrome smelter at the freezone Sohar last week.
Shaikh Saad bin Mohammed al Mardhouf al Saadi, Chairman of the board of the Port of Sohar, signed the contract together with the CEO of Freezone Sohar, Mr Jamal T Aziz, and Abdulla Ahmad Sulaiman al Hadi, Chairman of Gulf Mining Materials.
With the contract signing, Gulf Mining will build a ferrochrome smelter with a capacity of 50,000 tons per annum of ferrochrome with the help of two furnaces of 16500 kva each. The project is expected to be completed within 12-14 months from the date of construction.
Mr Kanwal Gambhir CEO of Gulf Mining said that chrome ore for the smelter will be primarily sourced from the company’s mines in Samayil, supplemented with procurements from other mining firms operating in the Sultanate.
He added that “Gulf Mining will also be looking at double the capacity of its smelter to between 110,000 tons per year to 120,000 tons per year tentatively by the year 2015.”
Gulf Mining Materials Co, established in 2005, is a 100 per cent Omani company owned by Abdulla Ahmad Sulaiman al Hadi and his children. It the largest chrome ore mining and exporting company in Oman. GMM predominantly mines, extracts and processes chrome, marble and laterite along with other materials. Besides mining chrome ore, GMM has set up the first ever chrome beneficiation plant in the Wilayat of Samayil with a monthly processing capacity of 15,000 tons. The plant offers chrome ore concentrates of more than 38 per cent purity.
