[Fellow]US sheet prices hold steady amid widening offers

[ferro-alloys.com] US sheet pricing was largely stable to end the week Friday, though the range of offers heard for hot-rolled coil continues to be wide as mills look to fill August order books, according to market feedback.

Prices seem to be "all over the place" at the moment, but are at a minimum of $900/st on HRC and $1,000/st for CRC, a mill source said. The mill was holding the low-end of its HRC offers to $920/st, he said.

Slab availability at US re-rollers could be contributing to some of the current noise in the market, the mill source said, as it may make sense for them to sell at a lower level for August production if there is a slab sitting on the ground already that is not impacted by the US 25% tariff on steel imports.

A US service center source was quoted $920/st for HRC earlier this week by a mini mill producer, but said the mill had raised its asking price to $930/st Thursday.

Energy market demand remains good and there are some large orders that have been placed recently that some mills have benefited from getting, the mill source said.

Canadian sheet mills were heard to be doing limited business in the US since the 25% tariff on steel imports took effect for Canada June 1. Canada levied reciprocal tariffs on US steel imports July 1, which has slowed shipments in the other direction as well, a Canadian mill source said.

The combined Platts TSI price index uses a volume-weighted average calculation -- according to TSI's standard -- to determine value on an ex-works Indiana basis.
