Steel Furnaces and Re-rolling mills observed regularly by Pak-EPA in Islamabad
In Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), 35 steel units are frequently observed by Pakistan Environment Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) and in any event of violation of National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS), action will be taken. Official resources reported that the main cause of air pollution in ICT are steel units which are continuously being monitored by Pak-EPA but since then this number has not recorded a significant increase. Few months back, a survey was conducted that acknowledged a total of 185 industrial units in I-9, I-10 and Kahuta Triangle containing 35 steel units, according to the sources. During the inspection by Pak-EPA team at the industrial area, they found three industries to be non-compliant as their anti-pollution equipment was not functioning.
Lawful steps commenced through Environmental Protection order and ensuing closure of the industries through ICT administration are being issue. A fine of five million rupees each was charged on the four steel furnaces and re-rolling mills and are sealed the same day after Environmental Protection Order (EPO) is allotted on account of non-compliance of court order. Sources also reported that the team is specifically observing those furnaces and mills who are violating the NEQS and have no air pollution control equipment’s installed. In July, the Pak-EPA also inspected I-9, I-10 and Kahuta Triangle units and are directed to firmly comply with NEQS.
Its values stated here that Pak-EPA is authorized under Pakistan Environmental Protection Act - 1997 for protection, conservation and rehabilitation of environment in Islamabad Capital Territory.
