[Ferro-Alloys.com] The major news was the breakdown in the South African mining and smelting sector. In addition to labor disruptions, the transportation strike has had a major impact. Assmang last week was forced to declare a force majeure on selected manganese alloy shipments, mostly to Japan.

Mogale also declared a partial force majeure on silicomanganese shipments. The US was not affected since there are sufficient stocks. Deliveries of manganese ore are being held up at both the mines and the ports. No one knows how long the strikes will continue but each day poses more problems for all parties.

However, if the strike lasts more than a few weeks, price will have to rise as available material dwindles.
