[Ferro-Alloys.com] US low-carbon prices were softer last week, while European silicomanganese, high-carbon and medium-carbon prices were all over the board but were trending down.
The Chinese market was closed last week. Reports that BHP Billiton is preparing to sell its manganese operations are premature.
Insiders say the company has not been in talks with anyone and has no plans to sell at this time. "BHP Billiton has made a great deal of effort to sort out its manganese division and has the cheapest and best asset in the world in Australia," an analyst comment. "Why would it want to sell now?"
Georgian American Alloys acquired CC Metals & Alloys (CCMA), the three- furnace specialty ferrosilicon smelter, from an affiliated company, Optima Group, in exchange for shares of GAA. CCMA now joins Felman Production and Felman Trading as a subsidiary of GAA. GAA also provides management oversight of Georgian Manganese and Vartsikhe 2000.
Georgian Manganese, which is now the largest single supplier of imported silicomanganese into the US, and Vartsikhe 2000 own manganese ore mines and the largest ferroalloys plant in Georgia producing silicomanganese.
The Georgian facility also has a hydroelectric power facility. Felman Trading will continue to be the primary distributor of ferrosilicon produced by CC Metals & Alloys.
