[Ferro-Alloys.comMore than a third of Chinese steel mills are considering cutting steel production due to rising inventories, a shortage of raw materials and weak downstream demand caused by the coronavirus, according to a recent S&P Global Platts outlook survey.

"We have difficulties shipping raw materials from the port to mill. Our raw material inventory is not that sufficient; with some brands it's only 2-3 days, but it is higher for some other brands," a mill procurement official said.

Miner Rio Tinto has trimmed its 2020 iron ore shipments guidance from the Pilbara area of Western Australia by between 6 million mt and 9 million mt, or around 2%, due to infrastructure damage and shipping restrictions caused by the recent passage of tropical cyclone Damien.
