[Fellow]Glencore weighs options to restart Quebec mines

[ferro-alloys.com]In its latest update on the covid-19 pandemic, diversified mining giant Glencore said it is analyzing options to restart its operations in Quebec before May 4, following new developments in the province’s business landscape amid the crisis.

On Monday, the government of Quebec declared mining activities to be “essential” businesses, essentially allowing companies to resume mining as early as Wednesday.

Glencore operates the Raglan nickel mine and the Matagami zinc mine in Quebec, which were shut down in late March along with operations in three other countries.

In Colombia, Glencore said its Prodeco mining operations will remain on care and maintenance until at least April 27, as a result of an extension to the nationwide quarantine.

In Peru, it was announced that operations at the Antamina copper-zinc mine — a joint venture with BHP, Teck Resources and Mitsubishi — would be halted for at least two weeks to mitigate the spread of covid-19.

In Zambia, Glencore is currently in discussions with the government on a way forward for its Mopani Copper Mines subsidiary, following the recent announcement that the operation will transition to care and maintenance.
