Japanese car manufacturer Nissan will start using green steel and aluminium sheet in production from January 2023 as part of the company's decarbonisation drive.
Nissan announced on 19 December that it will start procuring Kobenable Steel - "environmentally friendly" steel produced by Japanese steel mill Kobelco. Kobelco uses a blast furnace with new technology that reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by as much as 100pc of CO2 equivalent during the iron-making process, before the iron is used in Kobenable Steel production.
Kobelco launched Kobenable Steel in May. Japan's largest car producer Toyota now uses Kobenable Steel in its racing cars.
Nissan will also procure from Kobleco an aluminium sheet made from raw materials using solar power generated electricity, which could reduce GHG emissions by half compared with the conventional process, Kobelco said.
Green metal will currently be used only in domestic production, a Nissan representative told Argus. The carmaker produced around around 58,000 units in October.
The carmaker did not disclose how much of its conventional steel will be replaced by the new material, but said it will not be whole. "We plan to expand it (replacement) gradually," the representative said.
Nissan initially plans to use Kobenable Steel in the production of its Serena model, then expand its use to other models. The company will use green aluminium sheet first in its Ariya and X-Trail models. (argusmedia)
