Indian state-controlled producer Steel Authority of India (Sail) has signed an initial deal with German technology firm SMS, in a step towards decarbonising its operations.

The companies will explore innovative and sustainable solutions for the long-term transformation of steel production, aiming to reducing carbon emissions across Sail's five integrated steel plants in the states of Jharkhand, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.

The initial deal was signed on 3 August, the company said, adding that it aligns with India's 2070 goal of net zero emissions. Sail is India's third-largest steel producer after JSW Steel and Tata Steel. It posted its highest-ever crude steel output of 18.3mn t in the April 2022-March 2023 fiscal year, accounting for around 15pc of India's total crude steel production.

The Indian steel ministry assigned 13 task forces to define a roadmap for green steel earlier this year to reduce emissions from the hard-to-abate sector. The European Commission's impending Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, which can hurt Indian steel trade with Europe, has also reinforced the need to produce greener steel. Europe is a major steel export destination for Indian mills. argusmedia
