LONDON, Dec 16 (Reuters) - The global nickel market surplus more than doubled to 147,600 tonnes in the first 10 months of 2013 compared to the same period last year, a monthly bulletin from the Lisbon-based International Nickel Study Group (INSG) showed on Monday.

The surplus in the first 10 months of 2012 was 65,000 tonnes.

World primary nickel consumption totalled 1.461 million tonnes in January to October, while primary nickel output was 1.609 million tonnes.

October's surplus was 21,300 tonnes, the biggest monthly surplus since December 2012, INSG data showed.

Producers held 90,400 tonnes of nickel in September, down from 91,400 tonnes in August. The oversupply is reflected in inventories in London Metal Exchange-registered warehouses, which have tripled since late 2011 to a current record of 255,354 tonnes , LME data show.

Benchmark LME three-month nickel prices have fallen nearly 18 percent this year, making it the worst performing base metal.
