Vedanta’s zinc and iron ore output for the second quarter rose but copper production dropped.

India-focused metals group Vedanta Resources Plc posted strong gains in second-quarter zinc and iron ore output, its most profitable metals, but copper production fell.

Vedanta also said on Monday its expansion projects were progressing well, including a new aluminium smelter in India that is ramping up and a copper smelter in Zambia.

Vedanta shares, which have shed 65 percent since touching a peak in May, jumped 9.5 percent to 911 pence by 0715 GMT, outperforming a 6.2 percent increase in the UK mining index.

Cazenove said it was upgrading its earnings estimate for the current fiscal year by 3 percent due to the data.

"Overall these are solid if unexciting numbers, with the company delivering modestly ahead of forecasts in the key zinc and iron ore businesses," a note said.

Refined zinc production for the three months to end September jumped 30 percent to 122,000 tonnes compared to last year while iron ore output rose 39 percent to 2.56 million tonnes from 1.85 million tonnes.

Zinc and iron ore are the firm's two most important metals, accounting for 32 percent and 29 percent of first-quarter core profit.

The production volumes for the first half were the highest ever for aluminium, zinc and iron ore, the firm said.

The company -- which has operations in India, Australia and Zambia -- said aluminium production rose 7.1 percent to 106,000 tonnes.

The first phase of the new Jharsuguda aluminium smelter had been commissioned and was expected to achieve full capacity of 250,000 tonnes by the end of the fiscal year.

The Indian Supreme Court cleared the firm's bauxite mining project in Orissa, it added.

Copper cathode output in India fell 11 percent to 81,000 tonnes due to problems following a maintenance shutdown in the first quarter while in Zambia it declined 7.5 percent to 37,000 tonnes due to lower grades.

"The new Nchanga smelter (in Zambia) and a new concentrator at Konkola are mechanically complete and commissioning activities have started," Vedanta said.
