Indonesia's tin production for 2008 was 79,210 mt, 13% lower compared with 91,280 mt last year, a senior official said late Tuesday.
The government has yet set a production quota for next year due to the lower prices for commodities, the mineral, coal and geothermal director-general at the energy and mines ministry, Bambang Setiawan, said.
Earlier, the regional government of Indonesia's Bangka-Belitung islands planned to propose that the central government lower tin production quotas by 33% in 2009 to 60,000-75,000 mt/year from the originally planned 90,000mt/year due to the lower prices and demand, the spokesman of Bangka Belitung regional government Latip Pribadi said.
Meanwhile Setiawan said that tin output quotas of 60,000-75,000 mt/year next year were "realistic and acceptable."
Bangka Belitung is the home of Indonesia's tin sector, and it has many smelters, including Koba Tin and state-owned tin company PT Timah.
COPPER, SILVER, GOLD PRODUCTION DECLINES
Meanwhile, Indonesia's 2008 copper production was 580,950 mt in 2008, 28% lower compared with 797,400 mt in 2007.
Silver output in 2008 was 209.06 mt this year down from 268.38 mt in 2007; and gold output was 57.94 mt down from 117.73 mt in 2007. Nickel-in-matte output fell to 74,160 mt this year from 77,930 mt in 2007.
The decline in copper, gold and silver output were due to a production problem at Freeport, according to Setiawan. Separately, investment in the mining sector rose to $1.6 billion in 2008 from $1.25 billion in 2007.
Royalties paid by mining companies increased by 12.8% to Rupiah 42.12 trillion ($3.83 billion) this year from 37.34 trillion last year.
The royalties from mining companies are expected to grow to Rupiah 43.15 trillion next year, the ministry's secretary-general, Waryono Karyo said. -Platts
