China imported 870,000 tons of steel products in January, down 38.7 percent year on year, and exported 1.91 million tons, down 53.8 percent on year, according to statistics from China Customs.
The steels import and export in January also fell by 6.5 percent and 39.7 percent respectively from that for the previous month.
However, steel billets import in January increased to 130,000 tons, the biggest monthly import volume since 2006.
Coke export in the month dropped 92 percent on year to 80,000 tons.
Iron ore import in January decreased 11.2 percent on year to 32.65 million tons, which also represented drop of 5.4 percent on month.
