China is expected to become net steel importer in March, said Shan Shanghua, secretary general of China Iron & Steel Association (CISA).
According to CISA, Chinese major steel makers' steel exports for March and April are estimated to be 299,100 tons and 129,600 tons, respectively, indicating China would become a net importer in the following months if the imports keep at the level of February.
Statistics from General Administration of Customs show that China's steel exports in February were 1.56 million tons, decreased 18 percent from the previous month and nose-dived 50 percent over the previous year, while the imports, at 1.09 million tons, up 25 percent on month and 12.5 percent on year.
The downtrend of exports is largely within the market expectation with RMB appreciation having made China's steel more uncompetitive on international market.
CISA anticipates that China's steel exports in 2009 may see a nosedive of 80 percent, much worse than the earlier forecast of 50-percent decrease.
Upon this, CISA has proposed to lower steel export duty and raise the export rebate.
