[Ferro-Alloys.com] China’s alumina imports saw a double-digit monthly decline in July amid higher prices, though shipments remained strong compared with a year ago due to tighter bauxite supplies after Indonesia introduced export restrictions on the ore.

Imports of the aluminum ingredient dropped 30.43 percent month-on-month in July but were up 700 percent on an annual basis, according to customs data released Monday.

The FOB price for Australian alumina has gained 2.26 percent since Aug. 1 and currently stands at about USD317 per ton. The figure is based on London Metal Exchange (LME) prices, which have been on the rise since Aug. 20.

Annualized growth however saw support from increased demand for imported alumina to make up for lower domestic output after Indonesia in May introduced export restrictions on a range of metal ores including bauxite. Shipments in the first eight months grew 191.8 percent year-on-year to 3.24 million tons.

Imports of unwrought aluminum and semis meanwhile registered solid growth amid arbitrage opportunities during the ordering period in late June and July. Shipments were up 20.34 percent on the month and 65.55 percent from a year earlier at 117,513 tons.
