Chile's bureaucracy has caused congestion in the country's main ports, putting steel processors at risk of drying up steel supplies, an industry body said.
The Chilean Metallurgical Industry Association (ASIMET) stated that approximately 100,000 tons of cargo were moored on two ships near the port of Lirquen, awaiting unloading operations before being transported to the local energy project site.
The industry group added that more than 30 of its members were affected to varying degrees by port congestion.
ASIMET chairman Daniel Arrigoni said,"Many of our member companies are very dependent on a timely supply of ships, and we will suffer heavy losses in the event of a delay in the supply of raw materials and increase our costs. The supply of steel in the international market is now tight and demand for steel in Chile is high ."
He said Chile would need to import steel instead if production stopped.
ASIMET explained that these "steel towers" for energy projects, which are more than 5 meters in diameter and 35 meters in length, require special permits for road transport, but have not been obtained from the authorities.
