According to foreign media January 14 news: the European Union on Thursday asked the World Trade Organization (WTO) to set up a group on Indonesia's nickel export restrictions.
As early as November 2019, the European Union complained to the WTO about Indonesia's restrictions on nickel exports.
Nickel is the raw material used to make stainless steel.
The European Commission said Thursday it would ask the WTO to set up a panel to rule on the matter.
Since 2019, Indonesian President Zoko Widodo (Joko Widodo) has said that its policy of restricting the export of nickel and other minerals will not change, and Indonesia will defend the EU's complaint to the World Trade Organization.
Indonesia, the world's largest producer of nickel, has become a major exporter of stainless steel since Vito adopted a stricter export policy on nickel. Foreign investment in the country's smelting industry has also increased significantly, especially from China.
EU has previously complained to the World Trade Organization (WTO) about Indonesia's restrictions on exports of nickel and other raw materials, which Indonesia aims to leave to domestic smelting and stainless steel industries. The European Commission, which coordinates trade policies in 28 EU member states, has said these restrictions unfairly limit EU producers' access to nickel, especially scrap, coal, coke, iron ore and chromium.
