[Fellow]Forrest paved the way for green steel

Ferro-alloys.com:The mining giant Andrew Forrest promised that the iron ore giant Fortsk will be committed to the future of green energy and announced a green steelmaking plan in the Pilbara region.

In the first ABC Boyer lecture of 2021 broadcast this weekend, Forrest stated in the recording that Fortescue will build Australia’s first green steel pilot plant this year, and a completely wind and solar power plant will be built in the next few years. Commercial plant that generates electricity.

Forrest said that there are two methods for producing zero-carbon steel or green steel, and Fortsk will test these two methods.

"One is to use our old method-green hydrogen to replace the coal in the furnace. You get steel, but it does not release a large amount of carbon dioxide (CO2), but only water vapor. In order to increase the strength of steel, you only Need to add carbon separately.

"Another way to produce green steel-the radical way-is to completely abandon the blast furnace and use renewable energy to generate electricity to mine ore."

Forrest said in a recorded speech that Australia is in an absolutely unique position in expanding the scale of green steel.

"We can treat the loss of the coal industry as a national disaster, but I always firmly believe that every setback is a seed of equal opportunity or greater. We produce more than 40% of the world’s iron ore. And we have the potential Green energy and hydrogen resources are immeasurable.

"If Australia only accounts for 10% of the global steel market, we will create more than 40,000 jobs-more than the amount of work required to replace every job in the coal industry. Not any old jobs, but similar jobs-construction Workers, mechanics, electricians, engineers, and all industries that are phasing out coal.

Forrest said: "The timing is good.

Although Fortsk currently produces about 2 million tons of greenhouse gases annually, Forrest pointed out that the company is working on decarbonization.

"By the end of this century, our trucks will use renewable energy. Imagine a fleet that only produces steam as exhaust gas. We also intend to develop green iron ore trains, powered by renewable electricity or green ammonia.

"At present, the global shipping industry is one of the largest single polluters in the world, so this year, we will begin to design to allow our ships to also use zero-pollution green ammonia."

Forrest said the company is also willing to share its technology to help competitors go green.

Regarding the question of where Furterske will obtain renewable energy, Forrest pointed out that the company is designing huge wind and solar farms that can generate more than 40 GW of electricity, and has invested in the largest in the world in the Northern Territory. The solar power farms and global energy storage facilities will meet about 20% of Singapore’s energy needs through a 4,500 km-long cable.

He said: "With these technologies, Australia will soon be able to mine iron ore without generating emissions."
