Recently, Clarkson research services said that although major uncertainties still exist, it is expected that the global seaborne trade volume in 2021 will return to and exceed the level of 2019.

Clarkson predicts that this year's seaborne trade volume will reach 12 billion tons, 0.5% higher than the level in 2019, with an increase of 4.2%. In its latest weekly report, Clarkson said that global seaborne trade volume will drop by 3.6% to 11.5 billion tons in 2020.

In the first few weeks of 2021, most non tanker shipping sectors reported high utilization and strong rates or rentals. The International Monetary Fund predicts that the global economy will grow by 5.5% this year. After a 3.5% decline last year, the size of the economy in 2021 will grow by 1.8% compared with that in 2019.

Looking at emerging and developed economies separately, the IMF expects emerging economies to grow by 6.3%, while developed economies are expected to grow by 4.3%, lower than the 4.9% decline in 2020.

According to a BIMCO report at the end of last month, the economic recovery in 2021 will not bring good news to everyone. The specific speed of economic recovery will depend on the development of the epidemic and changes in travel restrictions.

"As the global economy moves towards the next normal, some positive factors for shipping in the epidemic year will gradually disappear with the decline of commodity spending and the increase of consumer spending on services and travel. In addition, the government's stimulus plan will be limited, which will inevitably slow down the pace of recovery. " BIMCO proposed last month.
