[Fellow]CHRISTEL BORIES INVITED TO THE MANAGEMENT CIRCLE ON INDUSTRY AND CLIMATE

[Ferro-alloys.com]How can economic and environmental performance be reconciled, particularly in times of health crisis and economic recovery? What role does the industry have to play in the ecological and energy transitions?

These questions were addressed during the "Cercle du management" (Management Circle) on April 1st: this round table, co-organized by Bain & Company and Les Echos, aims to open the debate on management practices and major trends in the private sector. Several business leaders meet to exchange their points of view, their challenges and their methods. This year’s theme: "Climate and Business – Transformation imperative and innovation opportunities".

In this 100% digital 2021 edition, Christel Bories, Chairman and CEO of Eramet, confirmed the importance of the climate subject within the mining and metallurgical industry, which does indeed have a role to play in the reduction of CO2 emissions: "It is a major expectation from our fellow citizens, from the communities living near our sites and from our investors. We have a global CSR approach, which includes environmental, social and societal aspects. There is not one meeting with our investors where we don’t get a question on the subject. It is both a constraint and a pressure, but also a great opportunity!"

This was also the occasion to recall Eramet’s strategic role in the energy transition, particularly through our positioning in metals for electric vehicle batteries; but also to present the various levers the Group already relies on to reduce its emissions: "We are working on our energy efficiency but also on the processes themselves, for ore reduction for example: we try to capture carbon in order to concentrate it, liquefy it and store it. A pilot is under way in one of our Norwegian plants. Our others approaches include the use of bioreducers and, in the long term, hydrogen-based reduction. By the way, we just produced our first kilos of carbon-free manganese" explained Christel Bories.

In two years, Eramet has already reduced its carbon intensity by more than 25%. This objective, which had been set for 2023, has already been reached. Relying on this dynamic, the Group has decided to accelerate the process through a commitment based on a Science-Based Target for 2035: to reduce its CO2 emissions by 40% in absolute value on scopes 1 and 2 compared to 2019, and being carbon-neutral in 2050.
