Coal production rises in India amid power shortage

The Indian government said on Tuesday that the country's coal production increased 29 percent year-on-year to 66.58 Million Ton (MT) in April amid a power shortage due to lesser stocks of coal available at thermal power plants.
 
An official statement said coal-based power generation had registered a growth of 9.26 percent in April as compared to the same month last year, and a growth of 2.25 percent as compared to March this year.
 
The overall power generation in April had been 11.75 percent higher than the power generated in April last year, and 2.23 percent higher than power generated in March 2022, it added.
 
Coal-based power generation in April had been 102,529 Million Unit (MU), up 2.25 percent from March. The total power generation had also grown in April to 136,565 MU from 133,584 MU in March.
 
As per the statistics of the Ministry of Coal, the Coal India Ltd. (CIL), the Singareni Collieries Company Ltd. (SCCL) and the Captive mines/Others all registered a growth in coal production in April, said an official statement.
 
At the same time, coal despatch increased by 8.66 percent to 71.30 MT last month as compared to 65.62 MT in April last year. Amid reports about coal shortage, the Ministry of Railways had arranged special trains to despatch coal to the thermal plants.
 
Of the top 37 coal producing mines, 22 have performed more than 100 percent, and 10 mines' production stood between 80 and 100 percent, said the statement.
