Japan's sales of domestic passenger electric vehicles (EVs) more than doubled on the year in March, but their share in total domestic car sales was down from the previous month.
Japan's domestic EV sales increased to around 9,600 units in March, largely because of light passenger EV sales rising by more than 30 times from a year earlier to 4,500 units, according to preliminary data released by industry groups Japan Automobile Dealers Association and Japan Light Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Association on 6 April.
Domestic car manufacturers Nissan and Mitsubishi introduced their new EV line-ups last year. EVs of both manufacturers are categorised as light cars or "mini cars". These are defined as vehicles with length, height and width less than 3.4 metres, 2 metres, and 1.48 metres respectively, as well as an engine capacity below 0.66 litres, which is the Japanese standard, industry groups said.
EVs accounted for 2.2pc of Japan's total domestic passenger car sales in March, more than doubling on the year but down by 0.3 percentage points from February.
Japanese EV imports also increased by 14pc to around 1,900 units in March. China's EV manufacturer BYD started sales in Japan from January and sold 151 passenger cars in March, according to industry group the Japan Automobile Importers Association. argusmedia.com
