China's crude and stainless steel output is expected to reach or even exceed 10 million tons this year if no violent fluctuations occur in domestic and international markets, said Li Long, an official with the China Metals Association (CMA), Tuesday.

Data from CMA shows that China produced 9.6 million tons of stainless crude steel in 2008, up almost 20 percent from the previous year. Shanxi Taigang Stainless Steel Co. topped all companies with an output of 1.69 million tons, followed by Baoshan Iron & Steel Co. and Lianzhong Stainless Steel Co., with output being 1.09 million tons and 760,000 tons, respectively.

The combined output of the top ten stainless steel producing enterprises reached 6.51 million tons last year, accounting for 67.8 percent of the total.

Last year saw the domestic stainless steel enterprises produce 3.2 million tons of hot-rolled strip products, 2.2 million tons of hot-rolled narrow strip products, three million tons of cold-rolled strip products, 850,000 tons of cold-rolled narrow strip products, 600,000 tons of seamless steel tubes, 1.2 million tons of welded tubes, one million tons of bars and 450,000 tons of wire.

According to Li, the designed annual capacity of China's stainless steel production has surpassed 20 million tons, but the actual capacity is only 60 percent of that figure, keeping in line with apparent domestic consumption.

China's crude steel output topped 500 million tons last year, and the stainless steel only made up 1.65 percent of the total, compared to above 2.5 percent for other leading steel producers worldwide, Li added.
