Interfax-China reported that China's wind farms produced 12.6 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in the first half of this year, making China the largest wind power generator in Asia.

According to National Bureau of Statistics data released on July 17th overall, China's power plants generated 1.64415 trillion kWh of electricity over the first six months. As such, wind power accounted for 0.77% of China's total power generation in the first half of the year.

According to the National Energy Agency at the end of 2008, China's aggregate wind power installed capacity stood at 12.17 million kilowatts exceeding its original target of 5 million kW. China's wind farms produced 14.8 billion kWh of electricity in 2008.

The NEA projected that the country's wind power installed capacity could grow to 30 million kW by the end of 2010. As part of its wind power expansion plan, China aims to build several 10-million kW wind farms over the next decade in the wind-rich provinces of Gansu, Hebei and Jiangsu, as well as Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Construction of the first such wind farm has already begun in Gansu's Jiuquan City. (Sourced from Interfax-China)
