[Ferro-Alloys.com] China has abandoned its programme of liberalising the country’s economy by opening it to free market forces, according to the American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI).
The Washington-based body wrote to the office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) on September 20, alleging that China continues to injure US producers by subsidising its steel industry. China continues to massively subsidise its steel industry, manipulate its currency and trans-ship its products through third-party countries to avoid US duties, the AISI wrote in response to the USTR’s request for public comment. “What we’ve seen is that, in the decade since China joined the World Trade Organization, China has diverged from its path of economic reform back to an increased emphasis on state intervention and state control,” Kevin Dempsey, the AISI’s senior vp of public policy, general counsel and secretary, told Metal Bulletin sister title AMM on September 20.
