[Fellow]DENR LIFTS ALMOST 100% OF BAN ON QUARRY OPERATIONS

[ferro-alloys.com]The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) issued an order last week lifting the ban on quarrying operations in almost all provinces of the country; except in Naga, Cebu, where dozens of residents died from landslides following the onslaught typhoon Ompong.

DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu issued the order after a thorough assessment conducted by geologists from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) found that the quarry sites in other parts of the country were safe.

This was also to prevent the further disruption in the supply of construction materials, such as cement and aggregates, which could result in higher prices and delay in the construction projects all over the country.

Cimatu said the DENR decided to allow mining firms in La Union, Pangasinan, Bulacan, Pampanga, Zambales, Batangas, Rizal, Camarines Sur, Misamis Oriental, Iligan City and Davao City to resume operations.

To recall, Cimatu imposed a nationwide suspension on quarrying operations following the deadly landslide that occurred at Sitio Sindulan, Barangay Tinaan, Naga City, Cebu last September 20.

According to the October 6 report of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the number of casualties in Naga, Cebu has risen to 77 with several others still missing.

Cimatu reminded all local government officials to revisit the geohazard maps previously provided to them by the MGB so they will be guided by the prevailing geohazards which their respective areas are susceptible to.  These maps are useful guide in the formulation of their land use plan as well as in disaster prevention, mitigation and response.
