Mexican steel consumption will be 21.3 million tons this year, down 13.4% from the previous year, the Mexican Steel Association said Canacero Monday.
Jose Roman Vergara, the Canacero's head of commerce and statistics, said the country's domestic steel consumption should increase by 7.3% in 2021.
Vergara urged investment in the country's steel industry, including infrastructure, to boost domestic steel demand.
"We expect the recovery process to be longer than previously expected," he said at a first-line meeting. There may be no recovery like in previous years. The recovery is expected to be moderate and gradual."
Vergara said the infrastructure projects the Mexican government is pushing would bring 1.5 million tons of steel to domestic steel producers. These projects will benefit steelmakers such as Ternium Mexico、Deacero and Villacero.
